The Olive Oil Times Ranking System

The Olive Oil Times World Ranking measures the highest quality extra virgin olive oil brands and producers with detailed historical results data by hemisphere, country, cultivar and organic classification.

The ranking is updated in real-time with NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition analysis data, compiled and verified by Olive Oil Times.

Brand Ranking

Rankings are based on points; a certified Gold Award earns 1.00 points, and a Silver Award earns 0.75 points. The worldwide and country listings include brands with five or more certified World Olive Oil Competition quality awards.

Producer Ranking

Olive Oil Times is committed to recognizing the highest quality extra virgin olive oil producers. Our worldwide and country listings include producers with 12.5 accrued points or more.

This is how we rank producers based on their winning record.

Variables:

  • G: Number of Gold Awards won.
  • S: Number of Silver Awards won.
  • L:  1 if the producer won an award in the most recent competition year, 0 otherwise.
  • T2: 1 if the producer won an award in the penultimate competition year, 0 otherwise.

Formula:

Rank Score = (G * 1) + (S * 0.75) + (L * 7.25) + (T2 * 2.25)

(G * 1): Each Gold Award contributes 1 point.

(S * 0.75): Each Silver Award contributes 0.75 points.

L * 7.25): Adds a premium of 7.25 points for winning an award in the current year.

(T2 * 2.25): Adds a smaller premium of 2.25 points for an award won last year.

Examples:

Producer A: Won a Gold Award this year and a Silver Award last year.

Rank Score = (1 * 1) + (1 * 0.75) + (1 * 7.25) + (1 * 2.25) = 1 + 0.75 + 7.25 + 2.25 = 11.25

Producer B: Won a Gold Award last year but no awards this year.

Rank Score = (1 * 1) + (0 * 0.75) + (0 * 7.25) + (1 * 2.25) = 1 + 2.25 = 3.25

Producer C: Won 2 Gold Awards and 3 Silver Awards this year but no awards last year.

Rank Score = (2 * 1) + (3 * 0.75) + (1 * 7.25) + (0 * 2.25) = 2 + 2.25 + 7.25 = 11.50

Producer D: Won 7 Gold Awards and 3 Silver Awards but no awards in the last two years.

Rank Score = (7 * 1) + (3 * 0.75) + (0 * 7.25) + (0 * 2.25) = 12 + 2.25 = 9.25

Here's the breakdown:

Consistency is key: The longer a producer has won awards, the higher their rank. Each year's award adds to the score, demonstrating ongoing excellence.

Gold is great; silver shines, too:

Gold Awards earn one point. Silver Awards also contribute significantly to an overall score.

Recent wins get a boost:

Winning awards recently reveals a producer at the top of their game. We attribute bonus points for awards won in the current and last years.

In simpler terms:

Producers earn points for every award and year they've won. Gold Awards are worth more than Silver; recent wins gain extra points.

Why this approach?

This system rewards consistent excellence over time, acknowledges the value of both Gold and Silver Awards and highlights producers delivering outstanding quality.

Consistency Score

The Olive Oil Times Consistency Score measures how regularly a producer earned a certified World Olive Oil Competition quality award over the past ten years, with more weight given to recent years.

ConsistencyScore = BaseScore + max(0, ((∑ᵢ₌₀ⁿ₋₁ Wᵢ * Pᵢ) / ∑ᵢ₌₀ⁿ₋₁ Wᵢ) * 10 - (Gaps / 2) - BaseScore)

Where:

  • Pᵢ is a binary variable representing success in year i.
  • Wᵢ is the weight for year i.
  • Gaps is the number of years with no participation.
  • BaseScore is the predefined base score.

Success tracking: The ranking examines each year and marks whether the producer achieved award-winning quality.

Weighting recent years more: The formula values recent wins more than older ones.

Calculating weighted successful participation: The analysis adds up the producer's successes, giving more weight to recent years. This provides a number that reflects the frequency and recency of successful participation.

Normalizing the score: This total is divided by a value that adjusts it to a scale from 0 to 100. A score closer to 100 means the producer has consistently succeeded, especially in recent years.

Penalizing gaps: Points are subtracted for years when the producer fails to achieve a quality award.
