Olive oil production in Portugal continues to increase steadily, with farmers and millers in the Iberian country yielding 150,000 tons in the 2023/24 crop year. The largest increases were seen in the southern region of Alentejo, which is responsible for the vast majority of the country’s output. Portugal is in the midst of an olive oil revolution. The construction of the Alqueva Dam in Alentejo made vast parcels available for the proliferation of super-high-density olive groves, allowing the country to triple production over the past two decades. Some experts expect Portugal to overtake Greece as Europe’s third-largest producer by volume.
