Uruguay's olive oil industry is a recent success story. Though production began in the 1960s, it's boomed in the last decade. Ideal growing conditions, particularly in Maldonado, and government support have fueled this growth. The country boasts over 10,000 hectares of olive groves, with Arbequina being a popular cultivar. Production recently hit a high of 2,047 tons, with most being high-quality extra virgin olive oil. Two major producers dominate exports, sending Uruguayan olive oil to neighboring Brazil and beyond, establishing a strong reputation for its quality.
